DIY Friday: Eco-friendly Wedding Cake

Your wedding day should be a unique expression of you. In designing the elements of your wedding, remember that DIY projects are worth it if only if they save you money and don't add to the stress level of your day.  Kris Cochran's, book The DIY Bride: 40 Fun Projects for Your Ultimate One-of-a Kind Weddings, (get it at your local bookstore here) explores the costs associated with DIY wedding projects versus the cost of purchasing the items in a store. If you have envisioned the perfect wedding cake since you were seven and don't bake, a DIY wedding cake is sure to flop! However, there are several ideas that are simple, eco-friendly, and could be a fun way to enlist the help of loved ones wanting to participate in co-creating your special day.

Cake
There are several things you can do to make your DIY cake project simple and seamless.
When choosing the ingredients for your cake, try to use as many organic ingredients as possible. Pickyourown.orglists locally owned farms where you can pick your own berries to make jams for the cake filling. (Depending on how DIY you want toget) By making extra, you could also give the jam as a thank you giftso guests can continue to enjoy your special day! Using a pre-made cake mix will save on time. Whole Foods carries an assortment of cake batters, from organic to gluten-free. Selecting a buttercream frosting, according to Grace from Graceful Cake Creations, is the easiest frosting to work with. Using cake stands, chocolate shavings, and flowers adds decoration to your DIY project while keeping the process simple and helps hide any imperfections.

Cupcake Trees
Eco-friendly cupcake stand from Sav-on-Crafts. Lori's DIY project for the cake stand here.
Cupcake trees have become a huge hit for weddings. I love the idea of a cupcake tower/tree as it cuts down on waste. (Our brides always have so much cake left over at the end of the night). With cupcakes, you can make a selection of vegan friendly, wheat & gluten free, different flavors, etc to appease the needs of all of your guests.

Fake Cake
Fake cakes are another up and coming trend. Abby, author of  the blog Peaches By Plum, has a DIY outline of making her fake cake here. Her project cost her $15.00.
Anyone else have any suggestions?
Happy Friday,
Carrie
