DIY Friday: Eco-friendly Wedding Programs

When designing your wedding, it is easy to get carried away by the "hype and necessity"  the wedding industry creates~ must have chair covers, must have sashes to go with chair covers, must have flowers to decorate the sashes that cover the chair cover...You get the point.   Most of the brides thatget married at Inside The Bungalow are cost savvy, eco-conscious,DIYbrides that are looking to create a spectacular event withoutbreaking the piggy bank. About half of our brides choose to forgo the wedding program all together, thus making the ultimate eco-friendly choice as it saves on paper and trees. However, wedding programs can be awonderful opportunity to explain the details of your special day to yourguests, acknowledge the loved ones you have chosen to participate inyour ceremony, and enhance the overall "theme/message" of your day.

1. The Spotted Sparrow: Julia shares her own personal wedding programs, on her blog, and includes a step by step outline on how to create them.
2. Martha Stewart Weddings: These programs were made using a custom made personal stamp for the bride and groom's wedding day. The stamp can be used to create a theme for the invitations, programs and thank yous.
3. Martha Stewart Weddings: I like these for a couple of reasons: they are smaller than normal programs, cutting back on waste; placing them on the chairs adds a decorative touch without adding more materials and waste (If you hang the tags on every other chair, you can also cut waste and costs~ one per couple versus one per guest)
4. Invite Site: Many of the DIY from Invite Site are tree-free, 100% post consumer recycled papers, or plantable programs with seedlings embedded into the paper
5.  Intimate Weddings: I love multi-use items. These wedding programs are also fans, great for outdoor weddings. But wait, it gets better!
Amanda wanted to provide her guests with entertainment...On the back of the program, she came up with three wedding related games: Mad libs (loved them as a kid!), fill in the blanks, and a word search. She also provides a step by step approach tutorial on how to create the fans.
6. Martha Stewart Weddings:Program/Place Cards/Gift Bag/Decorations All-In-One. Satoko used all kinds of eco-friendly ideas for her wedding, including hanging cloth bags on a clothesline as decorations. Within each bag  were the programs and the thank you gift (book with the caterer's recipes). Attached to the bag were personalized labels (place cards) with the guests names and an animal stamped to it. The corresponding animal could be found at each table to let guests know where to sit.
7. Martha Stewart Weddings: Maria used cedar twigs to decorate her programs

As you look for paper for your programs, look for handmade paper or paper that's 100 % post consumer recycled. Do you a special idea or tutorial that you used to create your own programs?
Happy 4th!!!
Carrie

I loved this article! I think that today people get so carried away with "must-haves" in a wedding that the whole thing is one huge stressful - not to mention wasteful - experience! Nice to see someone talking about keeping costs down and making a great day regardless.
