There is no greater gift than the Present
CharACTers of the StOry
Heroine: The Witness
Carrie Hensley as herself
Chris Hensley as himself
Drew Hensley as himself
Betty Freeman as herself
Sunny Larson as herself
Ingrid Ortega as herself
Villain: Carrie's over inflated ever so self important ego
Chris calls me this morning at 6:15am to ask about the weekend. How overstuffed are we with commitments, weddings, etc?
Carrie: "There are no weddings, hon. That's why we are going to Levi & Brandi's party tomorrow."
Chris: "Carrie, let's be spontaneous. Let's get away for the weekend."
Somewhere lost between those words lie a magical subliminal mental Jeti Mind Trick. What I heard was, "Carrie, how quickly can you stress out?" I hung up the phone.
Enter stage right, the villain of the story. "I can't go away. Are you kidding?! I have too much to do this weekend. I have to teach yoga, we have a party, I have a breakfast engagement with my dear friend Sunny, I HAVE to attend the breast cancer fundraiser to honor Pauline, to bond with other women, I have even blogged about it. Who has time to jaunt off with the family!!!!???? I'm trying to get the business to just the right place so I can spend time with the family."
Emerge from within, the witness. The witness, which is so often discussed in yoga teachings comes from within. The witness begins to observe the drama for what it is...Just emotions, just reactions, just ego trying to get in the way.
"Breathe Carrie, slow down. How awesome that after 15 years Chris still likes to spend time together. What would it look like if you covered your yoga class, set up a different date with Sunny, and allowed the rest of the team at ITB to come together to raise awareness for breast cancer this weekend? What would it feel like to get away and laugh with Chris & Drew? What would it sound like to put away the tapping of a keyboard for 24 hours?" And this is the gift of the witness. To learn to stay present in the now, not to anticipate the future or fret about the past. To learn to experience each & every moment in the here and now.
Thank you to my mom for covering my class & to Sunny & Ingrid who were excited for us to go away! Stay tuned for pictures from our road trip...
