Sun Salutations, 108 & Bon Bons, Oh My

The story of the Nielson's has touched many of our hearts within the ITB community.  Catherine, one of our students, brought up a good point. Often, we hear about the initial tragedy, such as the plane crash. What makes this story unique is that Stephanie's sister, Courtney (Cjane), continues to share, on a daily basis, what Christian & Stephanie must endure for their recovery and what her own family is experiencing in the aftermath. While I don't pretend to know the families or pretend to know what they must be going through, this whole experience has encouraged me to reflect on my own life. My mind will not allow me to imagine not being able to see Chris or Drew for months without tears welling up in my eyes, knots growing in the pit of my stomach and my breath being taken from me. It is too close to home.  I also know I am not alone because of the outpouring of love and support, from all over the world, for this incredible family.
Students, here, have wanted to help from the beginning.  They are gearing up for the sun salutationathon this Sunday...they have been practicing...they are in training...  It is a way they feel they can give back.  The more sun salutations they complete the more money we can raise for the Nielson family.  (Side note, for those of you who have never heard of a yoga sun salutation click
here.) Typically in a vinyasa class, we may do between 10-15 sun salutations... So you can see why 108 is a little daunting... I have been asked why 108? 108 is a sacred number in yoga philosophy. There are 108 beads on a rosary & mala beads.  Click here here for more info on 108 as a sacred number.
To read the comment section on Courtney's blog is to understand that many of us cannot get this family out of our hearts, that many times throughout the day, our thoughts turn to the Maricopa Burn Center or the Great Room at Courtney's house. As of late, before and after class, our discussions lead to the Nielson's, their recovery, their journey, their family. Many tears have been shed.
So...it was with a smile and an offering that one of our students, Christy (aka. the backbone of raising over $13,600 for the Cup O'Karma fundraiser) brought it to my attention that I, too, might need some training.  If you recall, I invited students to pull up a couch & throw bon bons at me during the Sun Salutationathon. She thought I might need a little help catching bon bons in an up dog.  Last night, we practiced in class.

Side note: Bon bons hurt when tossed at forehead

I think Cora Lee thinks I am in trouble! I couldn't catch even one! (Notice, she was the only brave one who would practice near me!)

P.S. Stephanie we are thinking of you today in surgery.
P.S.S. Stephanie & Christian, thank you for the laughs & the tears.
P.S.S.S Courtney, thank you for being you!
P.S.S.S.S. So far, we have 20 people donating! That's over $2000.00. Only 80 people left, could it be you?
P.SSS to the 24th power: We may have a little giveaway for everyone who donates $108.00 or more...Stay tuned for details.
