THE CELL PHONE
I had prided (confessions of a yoga teacher-since I haven't achieved enlightenment yet-pride does pop up every so often) myself, as a parent, not to allow Drew to have a cell phone. Truly, he did not need one. The bubble I had created for him (can you imagine the dysfunction if I did not practice & teach yoga! My God woman, get a grip!!!) was such that I drove him to & from school every day. I knew where he was, that he had a lunch made with love and that he was safe.
This year has been a series of firsts. Drew is making his own lunch (or so I thought... just found out today that it appears to be too much work for him. Hmmmm) and walking to Poston Junior High. In comes the "super cool aunt" Mimi who happens to have an extra cell phone. Somehow, I believe the two of them were in cohoots, the seed of wanting a cell phone was planted. No way, no need, not going to happen, nope, naw... You get the point, I think and then....MY MOTHER...shares a different perspective and I am sent spiraling through time back to my own junior high days.
To this day, I remember that sweet exchange as if I were a crack addict waiting for the drop off. Amy Norris...7th grade... on the Holy Name playground (which was an asphalt parking lot-apparently another story for another day)...GUESS JEANS...Me buying them used for $30.00. Do you know how many hours I spent babysitting the Gorchow kids at $2.00 an hour to wear those jeans? (Insert shout out to the Gorchow kids, Jessica & Zach, on Facebook here)
Replace the guess jeans with the cell phone and I get it. I remember what it is like to be 12 going on 13. Thank goodness for pay as you go phones. Drew is learning to be responsible because he has to pay for the minutes. The bonus? He is so excited to have a phone, EVEN I am getting texts. The first night he had the phone, he spent the night at a friend's house. This was our text exchange in the morning:
Drew texts...Hello
Mom texts... Hey
Drew texts...Hi
Mom texts...Are you having fun
Drew texts...Yes
Mom texts...Cool
